Syringe Access Fund Awards Nearly $2 Million In Grants For Syringe Exchange & Related Public Policy

Washington, D.C. - March 26, 2012 - The Syringe Access Fund (SAF), a collaborative funding initiative of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Levi Strauss Foundation, Open Society Foundations, Irene Diamond Fund and AIDS United, announced the award of 55 grants totaling $1.98 million for SAF's Round Seven Grant Cycle, which runs through 2013.

The country's largest private supporter of syringe exchange programs (SEPs), the Syringe Access Fund was created in 2004 to support syringe exchange and public policy activities to reduce the risk of HIV infection, hepatitis C and other blood-borne pathogens among injection drug users and their sexual partners through expanded access to sterile syringes. 29 Organizations Receive Support to Advocate for Sound HIV/AIDS Public Policy In 9 Southern States

logo - Southern REACHWASHINGTON, D.C. -- March 15, 2012 -- 29 community-based organizations in the Southern United States will have increased capacity to advocate for sound public policy that address the needs of those in the U.S. South most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS thanks to recent grants from AIDS United. With support from the Ford Foundation, AIDS United recently granted $1.4 million to organizations in the Southern states of Alabama, Arkansas, Northern Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. It's almost springtime in the South, but no amount of sunshine can hide a devastating problem in Selma, Ala. While most Americans live far removed from HIV and its complications, in this town -- and in the Southern region of the United States -- it can't be ignored.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2010, the southern region of the United States saw the highest rate of new HIV infections related to population. In Selma, where, according to the latest census data, 38.1 percent of the population lives below the federal poverty line, feelings of shame and frustration, coupled with limited access to care, converge to form a crippling public health crisis.
