Want to Know Where Your Congressional Candidates Stand on HIV Related Issues? AIDS United’s Midterm Questionnaire Can Help

Right now, we are closer to ending the HIV epidemic in the United States than at any time in almost four decades. Thanks to the efficacy of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, the continued success of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, the implementation of innovative prevention measures like pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and the increase in access to healthcare through the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid expansion, new HIV diagnoses are at their lowest point since the early days of the epidemic.

Despite this progress, significant work lies ahead to ensure quality care for people living with HIV, to reduce new HIV infections, and to protect the human rights and dignity of people and communities affected by the epidemic. For HIV advocates, much of the past 18 months has been spent fighting to keep elected officials in Washington from rolling back the hard-won progress and reforms that benefit people living with and affected by HIV and fighting for the basic human rights of many of our allies and neighbors.

Because of the struggles that HIV advocates have been forced to undertake in recent years and the untapped potential that exists for our federal government to scale up its response to the HIV epidemic, the upcoming 116th Congress represents a tremendous opportunity to fast-track this response and finally end the HIV epidemic. However, in the current political landscape it can be hard for voters to pin down where their candidates stand on ending the epidemic. That is why AIDS United created our 2018 Congressional Midterm Candidate Questionnaire.

Comprised of 15 questions that cover everything from Ryan White Program funding and the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS program (HOPWA) to Medicaid expansion and ensuring health care for immigrant populations, AIDS United’s Midterm Questionnaire has been designed to map out candidate positions on the policies that have the greatest impact on people living with and affected by HIV. Whether it’s finding out a Congressional hopeful’s stance on HIV criminalization or simply determining the depth and breadth of their knowledge on more recent developments in HIV science like Undetectable = Untransmittable or Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, it is our goal to use this questionnaire to bring HIV-related issues to the fore of this midterm election cycle.

So far we have received 25 completed questionnaires from political candidates  all across the country and the political spectrum. But, with a little less than a month to go until election day on November 6th, there is still plenty of time to hear from more candidates. We encourage everyone to send the following link to our Midterm Questionnaire to any Congressional candidates running in their district or state, asking them to complete it so that HIV advocates can have a good idea of where they stand on the issues that matter most them.
