AIDS United's CEO mourns the passing of Henry van Ameringen

Henry van Ameringen, a major HIV and LGBTQ+ advocate, died at his home last Wednesday. He was 90 years old.

Van Ameringen was a leading and long-standing supporter and funder of national and regional organizations addressing LGBTQ people and HIV including AIDS United.

Jesse Milan Jr., president and CEO of AIDS United, remembers van Ameringen as a pivotal supporter of AIDS United's work for its Syringe Access Fund and for our program and advocacy work in Puerto Rico.

"Henry was the soft-spoken giant supporter for syringe access and he cared deeply for people living with and vulnerable to HIV in Puerto Rico. When Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria hit, Henry called me personally and said, 'How can I help?' Within minutes he had donated the single largest individual contribution to the AIDS United Hurricane Relief Fund. It was the most generous call I've ever received. Our thoughts are with his spouse, T. Eric Galloway, and his remaining family during this time."

The philanthropist was president of the H. van Ameringen Foundation from 1991 to 2014. The foundation makes grants to support mental health services for people and communities with limited means. He worked for many years for International Flavors and Fragrances, a company founded by his father.
