AIDS United honors the memory of Monica Roberts

For decades, Monica Roberts has been the leading voice telling transgender stories when no one would listen. Her award-winning blog brought together countless stories that otherwise would have gone untold. Roberts died on Oct. 5, 2020, according to reports.

Following the news of Roberts’ death, Jesse Milan Jr., president and CEO of AIDS United, released the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of Monica Roberts’ tragic passing. Monica’s work to shine a light on the injustice and discrimination that Black trans women face every day has changed countless lives.

“Before many recognized the disproportionate impact of HIV on transgender women, Monica was speaking out about the importance of ensuring trans communities have resources to address and end the epidemic.

“Before national organizations and outlets were tracking anti-transgender violence, Monica’s reporting was often the only source of news when another life was stolen.

“Her work to tell the stories of transgender people and demand due dignity and respect changed her home state of Texas and communities across the United States for the better. Her stories are an indelible part of our history.

"On behalf of the entire AIDS United community, I offer our condolences to all of Monica’s family and friends — and the transgender and gender-nonconforming community across the country who are in shock at the loss of a matriarch. I also join my voice with many in celebrating the life and work of an extraordinary leader who will be sorely missed.”
