Shannon Wyss
Senior Grants Manager

Shannon Wyss is AIDS United’s Senior Grants Manager. They work with our online grant application and report systems and strive to make AU the most efficient and effective grantmaker possible. Previously, Shannon spent 2 years as a Program Manager overseeing the Transgender Leadership Initiative and the HIV Hurricane Relief Effort portfolios. Shannon has devoted their career to social justice, whether through providing technical assistance to programs serving trans people living with HIV or youth of color, supporting sexual freedom, helping parents find appropriate schools for their children with disabilities, or working in HIV philanthropy.

It all began in sixth grade, when Shannon learned that women made less than men in the workplace. Since then, Shannon has embraced feminism and grown to support a variety of social justice movements, including LGBTQ liberation, racial justice, and youth and children's rights.

In 1993, Shannon started the process of coming out to themself and now identifies as both genderqueer and queer. They’re very pleased to work with an organization that so strongly supports trans communities throughout the country.

Outside of work, Shannon supports gender non-conforming and transgender children, helps organize a local anti-racist book group, and publishes on social justice-related topics. Shannon has a BA in International Studies from Vassar College and an MA in Women’s Studies from George Washington University. They live in Hyattsville, MD with their life partner and various adopted animals. In Shannon’s free time, they enjoy photography, yard work, watching the news, and Facebook.
