SAF RFP
AIDS United, in partnership with Elton John AIDS Foundation, H. van Ameringen Foundation, Levi Strauss Foundation, and Open Society Foundations, is pleased to announce the opportunity for off-cycle support through the Syringe Access Fund.

The Syringe Access Fund is pleased to announce the opportunity for off-cycle support. Organizations that submitted an application in the Round Ten Grant Cycle (whether funded or not) are eligible to apply if they are applying for a different project. Organizations that did not submit an application in the Round Ten Grant Cycle are eligible to apply. Organizations may apply for a two-year award up to $15,000. The SAF off-cycle grants support start-up syringe services programs and emerging policy opportunities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 10 HIV diagnoses can be attributed to injection drug use. Currently, 175 people in the United States die every day from a drug overdose and 95 of those deaths can be attributed to synthetic or natural opioids. Widespread increases in opioid use and lack of access to evidence-based treatment and public health services have contributed to injection-related HIV and hepatitis C outbreaks.

Since the early 1980s, Syringe Services Programs (SSPs) have been an important public health intervention to stop the spread of blood borne diseases. SSPs represent one of the most successful evidence-based approaches for reducing the spread of HIV and hepatitis C. They also provide a doorway for people from historically underserved communities to enter larger systems of health, drug use cessation programs, and social services that may otherwise feel overwhelming and discriminatory toward people who use drugs.

The primary goal of the Syringe Access Fund is to provide core support for programs that demonstrate:
  • An ability to provide high quality syringe access services; and
  • An ability to conduct local, statewide, or national-level policy advocacy initiatives.

Through the Syringe Access Fund, AIDS United will provide grants to support work in the following areas:
  • Syringe Access Direct Services: Access to sterile syringes through syringe services programs; and
  • Education/Mobilization: Policy/advocacy campaigns focused on improving public policy at local, state, and/or national levels.

Applicants are eligible to apply for funding up to $15,000 and must be able to utilize funds over a 2-year period.

AIDS United will be accepting written applications on a rolling basis. There will be 4 grant reviews in 2018. All applications must be submitted electronically via AIDS United’s online application system.
