Tremaine Jones Honors #BlackHistory by Investing in #BlackHealth

In the United States, mass incarceration has separated black families, loss of jobs and negatively impacts the mental health of black people in this country. Black LGBTQ people are disproportionally arrested and incarcerated in the United States. When you add on factors such as unemployment, discrimination and lack of healthcare accessibility it’s a challenge for Black LGBTQ folks to get healthcare and stay in treatment.

As Black History Month and National Black HIV/AIDS awareness day gets closer I am reminded that both are to highlight the victories, challenges and struggles we face in past and current times. I am also reminded that black LGBTQ people have always played a vital role in U.S. history and their stories are often silenced. I am reminded as I do this work to liberate black queer and transgender people who are disproportionately impacted by HIV often have challenges seeking services.

As a Black Queer man, I understand that those who look and feel like me have about a 50% chance of getting HIV in their lifetime. At the Freedom Fund we ensure that in addition to bailing out black LGBTQ people we are the first person they see as when they get out of jail, we do an assessment and we work with them to ensure they get access to medical services. Including free HIV Testing/education, access to PrEP/PEP, referrals to medical screenings, and hormone replacement therapy competent medical providers.

Tremaine Jones is Project Director at The Freedom Fund, a Southern HIV Impact Fund grantee. This blog is part of the AIDS United campaign, Honoring #BlackHistory Means Investing in #BlackHealth, to highlight partners and grantees working to address the persistent and disparate impact of HIV on Black communities in recognition of Black History Month and National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
