North Carolina AIDSWatch Scholarship Honors Longtime HIV Advocate Carolyn McAllaster

Registration is open for AIDSWatch 2020, an annual opportunity for HIV advocates from across the U.S. to gather as a grassroots community and speak truth to power on Capitol Hill.

Ahead of AIDSWatch, we reached out to our friends at North Carolina AIDS Action Network, who have created a special opportunity to bring advocates to D.C. for the conference.

Each year, North Carolina is lucky to have a large delegation of advocates attend AIDSWatch. From being the loudest and most exciting group during the state roll call at the opening session (sorry, these are just facts…) to the ability to meet with every Congressional office from North Carolina, the power of North Carolina advocates is something truly inspiring to witness.

In recognition of the incredible advocates that we have here in North Carolina, about four years ago the NC AIDS Action Network started a small stipend program to help offset some of the costs of AIDSWatch. We wanted to help folks who might not be able to attend otherwise.

This scholarship program has steadily grown over the past several years thanks to a partnership with Campaign for Southern Equality, and this year we are thrilled to announce that on top of the stipend program, we are introducing the first-ever Carolyn McAllaster AIDSWatch Scholarship.

Named after longtime advocate and HIV living legend Carolyn McAllaster and funded as part of the NC AIDS Action Network Endowment established with the support of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, this scholarship will fully fund one North Carolina advocate to attend AIDSWatch 2020.

The leadership that Carolyn has shown both for North Carolina and the South cannot be matched. In celebration of her incredible work and retirement, this scholarship was created in order to begin uplifting and empowering new leaders to follow in her footsteps and legacy.
Our team at the NC AIDS Action Network is so excited for the continued growth of this program and can’t wait to see where it leads.

The NC AIDS Action Network Carolyn McAllaster AIDSWatch Scholarship and Stipend Application is currently open and accepting any applicants from North Carolina interested in attending AIDSWatch 2020 until Friday, Feb. 14, at 5 p.m. EST

In 2019, more than 600 advocates held more than 270 meetings with Congressional offices. They shared with us that AIDSWatch was a transformational experience and their plans to take that feeling of empowerment back to their communities.
